CVSA Blitz Preparation Guide — stay off the out-of-service list.
CVSA blitzes happen multiple times per year across North America. Ontario carriers that prepare in advance consistently pass at higher rates. This guide covers the most common focus areas.
How CVSA blitzes work
- Blitzes are unannounced roadside inspections lasting 72 hours
- Inspectors follow the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria
- A single critical defect puts the entire vehicle out of service
- Results are recorded against the carrier's CVOR profile
- Historical focus areas: brakes (most common), cargo securement, hours of service, lighting
Most common brake out-of-service defects
- Brake stroke exceeding adjustment limits (pushrod travel too long)
- Brake lining worn below minimum thickness
- Broken or missing pushrods
- Air leaks exceeding 4 psi per minute in single or 6 psi in combination
- Inoperative ABS on any wheel end
- 20% or more defective brakes on the vehicle
Pre-blitz checklist
- Check and adjust all slack adjusters (measure pushrod stroke, don't guess)
- Inspect all brake linings: replace anything at or near minimum spec
- Pressure-test the air system (compressor to chambers)
- Verify ABS warning lamp self-test on startup
- Check all lamps, reflectors, and wiring connections
- Inspect tires for tread depth, sidewall damage, and proper inflation
- Verify cargo securement equipment (straps, chains, binders)
- Review driver qualification files and hours-of-service logs
- Book a pre-blitz inspection at least 2 weeks before the expected window
